WhatsApp verification code not received: what to check
Check where WhatsApp is sending verification, when email is available, what number errors mean, and why a temporary SMS number cannot recover your account.

If your WhatsApp verification code is not received, first check the method on your registration screen. A voice call needs you to answer. A missed-call check works differently. Email has conditions that do not apply to a first registration. Waiting in the SMS inbox only helps when you requested an SMS.
Then separate three problems: WhatsApp rejects your number, the selected method cannot reach you, or the app requires you to wait. Each needs a different next step. Buying another number does not solve every one of them.
This guide uses WhatsApp's English help pages and terms, checked on October 4, 2026.
Start with WhatsApp's own registration requirements. Its registration guide says:
"You must be able to receive phone calls and SMS to the phone number you are trying to register."
The same page says you can only register a phone number you own, and that you must use a supported number type.
Check which verification method you requested
WhatsApp's registration guide describes an SMS registration code and a phone-call alternative. Its phone-call guide distinguishes voice calls from missed calls. These are different ways of confirming access to the number, even though they appear during the same registration process.
| Method | Where confirmation happens | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| SMS | Your phone's text-message inbox | Access to the number receiving the message |
| Voice call | An automated call reads a code | A line that receives calls; answer and enter the code |
| Missed call | WhatsApp checks an incoming call automatically | Android and the requested call permissions |
| A code reaches a previously verified email address | An existing account and the email/SIM conditions below |
With voice verification, listen to the automated message and enter the code. With missed-call verification, the call may appear as missed or rejected from an unfamiliar number. Your phone may not noticeably ring.
The missed-call method is Android-only. WhatsApp asks to manage calls so it can end the incoming call, and to read the call log so it can check that the call arrived. If you deny these permissions before registration completes, its guidance sends you back to SMS or voice verification. Do not keep waiting for a text after choosing a call check.
These are the routes relevant to the troubleshooting steps here, not a promise that your screen will offer every option. WhatsApp also mentions automatic verification in its registration and two-step verification overview. In some cases, it says, the app can verify your number automatically; then there is no code to wait for.

Can a WhatsApp verification code be sent to email?
Yes, for eligible re-registration of an existing account. It is not a way to create a new account using only an email address.
The email verification help page says you must previously have added and verified the address. It also requires an active SIM with the account's phone number in your device. Its guidance explicitly says that losing access to your number or SIM cannot be solved by using email to log in. Contact your mobile provider about a replacement SIM with the same number.
If email verification is offered and the code fails, use the newest email code. The page says earlier codes become invalid when you request several. Enter all six digits without extra spaces, on the device where you started the request. Email codes expire quickly; the page does not provide a universal lifetime.
That distinction matters when choosing a number. A verified email address is an extra login route with conditions. It does not turn a short-lived rental into a permanent number you control.
How long should you wait before trying again?
Follow the countdown on your own screen. WhatsApp's general registration guide says the wait varies and usually takes a few minutes. Its iPhone troubleshooting page describes a five-minute timer before trying the call option. Five minutes is guidance for that flow, not a guarantee for every device or every lockout.
The same troubleshooting page says repeated wrong-code entries can trigger a further wait. It tells you to wait the designated period and says that period cannot be accelerated. Guessing digits is therefore a poor troubleshooting step.
For a temporary number, there are two separate clocks: WhatsApp's retry timer and the number's reservation deadline. Our practical advice is to compare them before paying. If the app makes you wait longer than the reservation lasts, the number can expire before you are allowed to request the SMS. A new purchase does not give you control over WhatsApp's timer.

Number errors: formatting versus eligibility
Treat not a valid number as a reason to inspect your entry first. WhatsApp's troubleshooting guidance asks for the full international number and says to remove leading zeros and international exit prefixes. For a US mobile number, select the United States country code, +1, and enter the ten-digit national number. Do not insert a dialing prefix such as 011 into the number field.
Treat this phone number is not supported as a reason to check eligibility. These are troubleshooting categories, not a claim that every app version maps each exact phrase to one cause.
The registration guide lists VoIP, toll-free, premium and universal access numbers as unsupported. Ordinary WhatsApp also excludes landlines; the documented landline exception is WhatsApp Business. VoIP means calls carried over an internet phone service. A number can receive other texts and still belong to a type WhatsApp excludes.
See our non-VoIP number guide for how line classifications work. That explains a general verification mechanism; it does not establish which lookup provider WhatsApp uses. Neither a seller's label nor a familiar area code guarantees acceptance.
If the number is accepted but nothing arrives
Start with the receiving line. WhatsApp's iPhone troubleshooting page suggests sending a test SMS from another phone to the same number you entered, including its country code.
Use the test to narrow your question. If an ordinary SMS does not arrive either, tell your carrier that you cannot receive texts on that line. If it does arrive, report that ordinary SMS works but the registration message does not. This is a useful distinction to give support, rather than evidence that the verification message must be deliverable.
Travel adds another condition. WhatsApp's travel help page recommends checking roaming and notes possible extra charges. It also says the automated system should leave the code in voicemail when you select the call option. Check the line associated with your account, not just whether your phone has internet through a travel data connection.

For a separate login-unavailable warning, use the help page for that warning. WhatsApp says it may indicate suspicious activity or a terms violation, and describes trying later or contacting support when offered. It also distinguishes that warning from an inactive SIM or missing SMS. Do not treat every registration failure as a ban.
Why a shared number creates a different problem
A public inbox cannot give you private control of the registration message. If other visitors can read the inbox, they can read a code delivered there too. That is enough reason to avoid it for an account you care about.
WhatsApp's registration and two-step verification overview tells you never to share your 6-digit registration code with anyone. A public inbox shares it with every visitor.
A recycled number adds another issue: the previous owner may have enabled two-step verification. The registration overview distinguishes that extra security step from the registration code. Receiving an SMS does not mean you have permission to access someone else's existing account. If a rented number shows an existing account, follow the rental service's instructions to change it.
What an SMS-only temporary number can do
Compare that with WhatsApp's requirements. Its registration guide asks for a number you own that can receive calls and SMS. Its email verification page adds that an active SIM card with the account's number must be in your device to receive verification codes through any method, including SMS. A temporary online number cannot meet all of them: it receives SMS but not calls, it stops being yours when it expires, and there is no SIM card for it in your device. WhatsApp may refuse it at registration or restrict the account later.
Ativa SMS receives SMS only. It cannot receive voice calls, missed calls, email or codes delivered inside an app. A number is reserved for you for the period shown before purchase, up to 20 minutes depending on the option. It is then released and cannot be retrieved for later account recovery.
For an eligible use that follows the app's rules, compare the current options: the delivery rate appears when supplied, and the reservation period appears before purchase. If no SMS arrives before expiry, the purchase amount returns to your balance automatically. Cancellation or changing a number before a code arrives also returns the amount; some options require a two-minute wait. A balance refund does not guarantee registration.
Read those limits before you create an account. WhatsApp may reject the number or block an account. After a code arrives, a later block does not qualify for a refund.
When not to use a temporary number
Use a mobile line you can keep for your everyday WhatsApp, banking and payment accounts, your main email, and any account you may need to recover. A temporary reservation cannot meet that ongoing need. Adding email to WhatsApp does not remove the SIM requirement described in its email guidance.
WhatsApp's terms state:
You must access and use our Services only for legal, authorized, and acceptable purposes.
Ativa SMS also prohibits fraud and using the service to evade another app's rules or account limits. Review our terms of use. For a lasting secondary WhatsApp number, choose a SIM or eSIM with a phone number you retain and the required messaging and call capabilities.
