Do you need a phone number for Telegram? What +888 changes
Telegram needs a number, but not always a SIM. Learn what +888 costs, how to hide your number, where login codes go, and why temporary access can fail.

Yes, you need a number to register a Telegram account. You do not always need a SIM card, and you do not have to show your number to strangers. Those are three different questions, with three different answers.
If you want people in a group to contact you without learning your mobile number, start with privacy settings. If you want registration without a SIM, Telegram supports collectible +888 numbers through Fragment. If you want a temporary SMS number, the delivery channel and future account access are the two limits to understand before paying.
What number does Telegram require?
Telegram's FAQ states:
“Each phone number is a separate account on Telegram.”
For ordinary registration, its login guidance requires a mobile number in international format. For a US mobile line, that means +1 followed by your ten-digit number. The FAQ says landlines are not supported. A username gives other people a way to contact you; it does not replace the number at registration.
The official no-SIM announcement describes a separate route: blockchain-powered anonymous numbers from Fragment. They still give your account a number, with a +888 prefix.
| Your goal | What addresses it | What remains necessary |
|---|---|---|
| Keep your mobile number out of group conversations | Phone number privacy settings | Your registered number |
| Register without a physical SIM | A collectible +888 number | Ownership of the collectible and wallet access |
| Receive a registration SMS temporarily | An accepted number with SMS access | Telegram must actually choose SMS |
| Log in without an SMS each time | An available alternative, such as a passkey | An account already registered to a number |
Free calling apps are a separate question. Their numbers may have a different line type from a mobile line. Our non-VoIP number guide explains those labels and why they cannot guarantee acceptance by an app.
Who can see your number on Telegram?
Open Settings > Privacy and Security > Phone Number. The FAQ says the default visibility is people you have added to your address book. Check your own setting and any exceptions rather than assuming the default still applies.
The visibility choices govern disclosure. They do not change the number connected to your account. Telegram's privacy documentation also supports rules allowing or excluding specific users, so an exception deserves the same attention as the main setting.

There is a second control: Who can find me by my number. Telegram's privacy announcement explains that this appears when number visibility is set to Nobody. Set number lookup to My Contacts to prevent random people who save your number from matching it to your profile through that lookup.
That restriction concerns discovery by number. It does not make an existing conversation disappear. The FAQ also warns that people who already know and have saved your number can still see it.
For contact without sharing digits, a public username provides a searchable name and a t.me/username link. People who find that username can message you. Choose it with that consequence in mind, rather than treating a hidden number as a promise that strangers cannot reach you.
What +888 changes, and what it costs today
Telegram announced no-SIM registration on December 6, 2022. Fragment's explanation says collectible numbers are recorded on the TON blockchain. Its number marketplace states that all 136,566 sold out in December 2022. Today you buy from an existing owner.
On October 4, 2026, the For sale list sorted by ascending price showed a lowest asking price of 2,488. At 7:05 a.m. Brasília time, the first listing's detail page estimated US$3,828. Fragment's help page currently calls the payment currency Grams ($GRAM) and identifies the network as TON.
This was an immediate-sale asking price, not a completed purchase or auction bid. Prices and dollar estimates change; check the live listing.
Using +888 requires a funded TON-compatible wallet and ownership of the number. Enter the collectible number in Telegram. When the app asks for the login code, connect the wallet holding it to Fragment and view the code there. The code is not delivered to an SMS inbox.
Fragment says these numbers work on Telegram. They are not ordinary calling or texting lines, and other services would have to explicitly support them. Buying one does not give you a general-purpose number for every app.
Fragment warns that lost wallet credentials mean lost access to the wallet and collectibles; its terms say it cannot restore them. Collectible purchases are nonrefundable, and integrations are not guaranteed forever. Owning +888 requires ongoing wallet care.
Where does the Telegram login code arrive?
There is no universal app → SMS → call → email sequence. Telegram's authorization documentation says its system automatically chooses the delivery method. A retry can use a different channel after the displayed timeout. Read the destination shown by the app before waiting in an SMS inbox.

| Destination shown by Telegram | Where to check |
|---|---|
| Another Telegram session | The verified Telegram service chat on a device already signed in |
| SMS | The inbox for the number you entered; the code may be digits, a word, or a phrase |
| A call | The voice message or caller-number digits specified by the app |
| Login email | The configured email inbox |
| Fragment | The code page accessed with the wallet holding your +888 number |
The FAQ's call guidance limits dictated voice codes to accounts with Two-Step Verification enabled. Do not assume a voice call will be offered during a new registration.
If you are searching for a Telegram code in Gmail, check what kind of email Telegram is requesting. Its privacy policy distinguishes a login email from a password recovery email. The first receives authentication codes when that login method is used. The second helps reset a forgotten Two-Step Verification password. Telegram stores them separately.
A Gmail address can be your configured login email, but adding a recovery email does not automatically reroute every code to Gmail. Set up a login email when Telegram offers or requires it. Follow the destination on the login screen; an email address alone does not replace the registered number.
For SMS registration, use the official mobile app. Telegram documents conditions in which SMS or call delivery is available only through official mobile clients. An alternative client or desktop session should not be assumed to offer the same delivery options. Telegram also documents a Premium purchase requirement when SMS costs are high for the user's country or provider.
This matters with Ativa SMS: our numbers receive SMS only. An app notification, email, Fragment code, voice call, or missed call cannot arrive in our SMS panel. If the SMS never arrives before the selected number expires, the amount returns to your balance automatically.
Can someone use your number for Telegram?
Knowing your digits alone is different from receiving a login code. But access to that code is sensitive, especially if you have not enabled a second password. Never give a Telegram login code to another person or service. Telegram's account security guidance explains that Two-Step Verification makes the phone number alone insufficient to log in.
A temporary number creates a different problem: your access to incoming SMS ends, while the account remains linked to that number. That is why an inexpensive registration can become an expensive loss later.

For an account you intend to keep:
- Keep its number under your control. If you change your mobile line, update the number connected to Telegram while you still have access.
- Enable Two-Step Verification in Privacy and Security. Choose a password you can retain securely and verify a recovery email. Telegram's two-factor documentation recommends that email for forgotten-password recovery.
- Configure a login email when offered. Protect that inbox too. It has a different job from the recovery email.
- Consider a passkey. Telegram's passkey announcement describes login with a device PIN or biometrics instead of an SMS. It still explicitly tells users to keep an active registered number they control.
- Review connected devices. Use Settings > Devices to terminate sessions you do not recognize.
These measures improve account security. They do not make an expired temporary number available again or guarantee recovery after you lose it.
What to check before buying a temporary SMS number
If you are searching for a free phone number for a Telegram code, avoid an inbox that publishes incoming messages for everyone to read. A publicly displayed login code is not private. Free access also gives you no assurance of keeping the number.
Ativa SMS shows the reservation period before purchase: up to 20 minutes, depending on the option. The number is reserved only for you while active. You can also see a delivery rate when one is reported, helping you compare options before spending.
If Telegram rejects the number or points to an existing session you do not own, stop that attempt. You can cancel or change an unused number and receive the amount back to your balance; some options require a two-minute wait. Do not try to enter someone else's account.
Check current prices and create an account only if this limited SMS access fits your use. Telegram can reject a number or restrict an account. Once a code has arrived, a later app block does not qualify for a refund.
When not to use a temporary number
Use a number you can keep for your everyday Telegram account, important groups, or any account you expect to recover. The same applies to banking and payment accounts, your main email, and the WhatsApp you use every day. A temporary reservation cannot receive a future recovery SMS after expiry.
If your goal is simply to hide your personal number, Telegram's privacy controls address that without buying another number. Ativa SMS does not allow fraud or use that circumvents another service's terms. Telegram's terms prohibit spam and scams. Read our terms of use before purchasing.
